The New Clark International Airport has finally opened, commencing with local domestic flights, while international routes is set to start flying this month of September.
The new clark airport houses both international and domestic terminals and can handle 8 million passengers in a year. It has 110,000-square-meter floor area with four building levels and will service flights with 18 aero-bridges.
A huge terminal, with project cost of 9.36 billion pesos, travelers can still easily find where they need to go with its distinctive color-coded gates for arrival and departure.
Luzon International Premier Airport Development Corp. (LIPAD) is at the helm of the operations and management of CRK and has promised the public that the new terminal will be a terminal of safety, ease and quiet.
LIPAD is labelling the new Clark International Airport as a silent airport which means it will be the quietest and most relaxing airport in the Philippines because of it’s silent airport policy.
No longer will there be a cacophony of voices such as calls for boarding and departures, except for emergencies. Travelers will rely on posted updates for quick reference.
Passengers will be more at ease with the options that have no face-to-face interaction. Among these are the common-use self-service kiosks (CUSS) and the self-service bag drops. Travelers can check-in at these kiosks, shared by other airlines and that are without the need for ground staff.
This New Clark Airport International Project was initially approved in April of 2015, under the Aquino administration.
But In the wake of the North Rail fiasco of the Arroyo administration, proposals for the highspeed rail link to Metro Manila, deemed necessary but “too costly” for the government to consider.
Thus, the Aquino administration scaled back the plans for this new terminal – from its original eight (8) million passenger per annum capacity to 5 million passenger per
year.
When Duterte took office, the project was revisited, and was re-approved by NEDA in June 2017, based on the proposal of state-run Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) to expand the annual capacity of the Clark International Airport to it’s original eight million passenger capacity per year.
This project is considered to be the fastest approved mega infrastructure project under the Duterte administration; and is also the first Hybrid PPP project under President Duterte's infrastructure program, wherein the government builds the infrastructure using its own funds, and then bid the operations and maintenance to the private sector.
The government has chosen the Megawide-GMR Consortium to construct the new terminal of the Clark International Airport Terminal in Pampanga; wherein ground breaking ceremony took place in December 20, 2017, which signals the start of the construction of the new terminal.
After more than two years of construction, the new Clark International Airport is set to open next month, and it is expected to help ease the congestion at airports in Metro Manila.
