For 73 days, the defenders of Odessa held back the advance of the right wing of the Army Group South. Up to 18 enemy divisions were pinned down. The 4th Romanian army was never able to take the city by storm. They suffered such losses that it took two months to reorganize the army. Only the deterioration of the situation in the southern strategic direction forced the Headquarters to evacuate the city's garrison to strengthen the defense of the Crimea.
