Isn’t a VCO just a VCO. I mean a Triangle wave is a triangle wave - right? Sure there are some features on expensive VCOs - but the Minimod is literally 3x a basic Doepfer VCO. Does it sound 3x better?

Probably the biggest deterrent for people who are interested in Modular is the cost. And while there are ways to bring the Cost down - buying used or Building your own modules and cases - you’re going to shell out a lot for that system.

In this video I compare two VCOs - the Doepfer A-110-2 Basic VCO and the AJH MiniMod VCO.

I’m going to talk in depth about both VCOs - describe their features, etc. and then we’ll do some sound comparisons and I’ll give some final thoughts at the end.

Doepfer's A-110-2 is a smaller, reduced version of the A-110-1 VCO. Unlike its predecessor, the module does not have a sine wave out, and features a toggle switch for its octave control rather than a rotary switch. However, the module features additional linear FM and soft sync inputs. Additionally, there is a jumper that determines the tuning range, from 1/2 octave to 4 octaves.

The AJH Synth MiniMod VCO is a Eurorack version of the discrete transistor core oscillator found in the classic Moog Model D. The module's front panel features a switchable octave section, four waveform outputs, exponential and linear modulation inputs, and two distinct sync modes.
