How much a year to earn Pushkin in modern money
Alexander Pushkin, we perceive first and foremost as the great Russian poet, national pride. But we never think that Pushkin lived and how much he received for his works?
Official and landowner
In the nineteenth century, making money work too, it was not so easy. However, Pushkin in his works are well paid, and it was one of the main items of his income. However, not the only one.
Before Alexander started to get decent fees for his creation, he was forced to live on the salary of the official and the income from their estates. And the last was not so high. For example, the salary of a collegiate Secretary in the Ministry of foreign Affairs was only 700 rubles a year, according to puskinova Nikolai Smirnov-Sokolsky in the book "tales of the lifetime editions of Pushkin."
The estate Mikhailovskoye bring the family Pushkins annually about 3000 rubles. Inherited from his father part of the Nizhny Novgorod estate, village Kistenevo with 200 peasant souls, located next to the famous Boldino, Alexander had to lay before the marriage that brought him a 38 000. The wife, Natalya Nikolaevna, special dowry was not. By the way, and Michael, and Boldin did not belong to Pushkin and his parents. During the life of the poet possessed in fact only one Kisteneva.
Wages and salaries
The first significant literature Pushkin received for the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" - 1500 rubles. When it became clear that his works are very popular, the writer began to request large sums of fees. So, "the story of Ivan Petrovich Belkin" has brought him 5 thousand rubles. "Boris Godunov" - 10 000 rubles. Finally, "Eugene Onegin" - 12 000 rubles.
In 1831 the Emperor appointed titular adviser Pushkin's personal salary for his literary merits - 5000 rubles per year. The researcher of Pushkin's biography Alexander Cashew quotes the text of Pushkin receipts in the receipt of salaries from September 9, 1832: "I the undersigned have received from the Treasury of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following on the famous His Imperial Majesty the use of [14 sh] iz five thousand rubles due with the first of may to the first of September, 1832, a thousand chastiseth sixty-six rubles sixty-six kopecks."
Debts paid by the king
And still the money was not enough. In a letter to A. H. Benkendorf (may 1835) Pushkin laments:
"To pay all my debts and be able to live, have my family's business and finally without the noise and hassle of worrying about their historical works and their studies, it would be enough to obtain a loan of 100 000 rubles, But in Russia it is impossible".
In the same year the poet, by that time, received the title of gentleman of the bedchamber, according to the decree of Nicholas I from the Treasury was granted loan in amount of 30 000 rubles, which never were returned.
According to estimates Smirnov-Sokolsky in the 17 years of his literary career, Pushkin earned 255 180 thousand rubles banknotes. This amounted to 73 thousand silver rubles. If we translate this amount of the present course, it will equal about 2 million 200 thousand dollars. The annual income thus amounted to about 130 thousand dollars (if the terms of the present course).
The poet himself claimed that in order to maintain an acceptable standard of living he and his family needed at least 30 000 per year. The family was large and my wife had to buy a new outfit, plus the cost of field trips and assemblies... in Addition, Alexander was a gambling man and lost at the card table large amounts. In short, his available money was not enough, and he was constantly forced to get into debt.
By the time of his death the poet had about 140 000 rubles. Among his numerous creditors had friends, money lenders, partners in the card game, tailors, shopkeepers. Saved an orphaned family of the king, and addressed a petition friends of Pushkin. Nicholas I ordered to pay all the debts of Pushkin, including laid on his father's estate. Debt to the Treasury, of course, was also forgiven.
